Scott Townsend
Scott Townsend is a Junior Partner in the Reston, Virginia office of Hale and Dorr's Corporate Department. Mr. Townsend concentrates his practice primarily in the areas of general corporate and securities work, where he represents entrepreneurs and venture-backed technology companies from incorporation through later-stage venture capital financing, public offering or acquisition. He provides ongoing and transactional advice to both publicly traded and privately held companies in a variety of industries including software, life sciences, storage, network security, telecommunications, transportation, consulting and manufacturing.
Active in the community in various areas, Mr. Townsend serves as co-chair of the Advisory Board of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce Incubator Program. The Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce recognized Mr. Townsend as the "Member of the Year" for 2002-2003. Mr. Townsend serves as the co-chair of the Coaching Subcommittee for the Century Club Grubstake Breakfast event and is a member of its selection subcommittee. The Grubstake Breakfast event, run by the Century Club of George Mason University, provides exposure to early-stage ventures seeking investments between $250,000 and $2 million. Mr. Townsend is a member of the Coaching Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association's Capital Connection and has served as a coach to companies presenting at MAVA's Capital Connection in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Mr. Townsend serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Business Incubation Association, the Board of Directors of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors of the Century Club of George Mason University and the Advisory Council for George Mason University's Executive MBA Program. Mr. Townsend is also a Class Agent for Bowdoin College. Mr. Townsend has given presentations on topics including venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, and initial public offerings for groups including the National Business Incubation Association's International Conference, The Virginia Center for Innovative Technology, the MIT Enterprise Forum of Washington-Baltimore, the Hampton Roads Technology Council, the NxLevel Program for Technology Entrepreneurs, the Metrolina Entrepreneurial Council and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Townsend is admitted to the Bar in Virginia, Massachusetts, Maine (inactive) and North Carolina (inactive). Prior to joining the Firm in 2000, Mr. Townsend practiced with Goodwin Procter LLP in Boston, Massachusetts and Kilpatrick Stockton LLP in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Townsend is a member of the Science and Technology Law Section and Business Law Section of the American Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Association. Mr. Townsend received his J.D. degree from The University of Virginia School of Law, where he was executive editor for the Virginia Tax Review, a member of the Moot Court Board and president of Phi Delta Phi, the international legal fraternity. Mr. Townsend received an A.B. degree, magna cum laude, in Economics and Government from Bowdoin College, where he was named a James Bowdoin Scholar and served as vice-chairman of the Student Executive Board.
